Terms of employment for an hourly teacher
An hourly teacher’s employment is fixed-term, and the employment contract is made for no more than one academic year at a time.
An hourly teacher is hired to provide the teaching specified in the employment contract.
An hourly teacher’s duties include:
- planning and preparing lessons
- delivering instruction
- other work tasks directly related to the lessons
- participating in teacher meetings as specified in the employment contract
When necessary, the hourly teacher is also obliged to take care of other tasks related to the institute’s operations and curriculum within their own field, provided that, based on their competence and work experience, these can be considered suitable. Such tasks may include, for example, preparing exhibitions or performances.
Working time and duration of teaching
- 1 lesson = 45 minutes
- 1.33 hours = 60 minutes
- The duration of something other than a lesson is 60 minutes
- After two lessons, a 15-minute break is taken
Termination of the hourly teacher’s employment
A fixed-term employment relationship may be terminated by giving notice. The mutual notice period for hourly teachers at adult education centres is 14 days.
The most common reason for the termination of an hourly teacher’s employment is the end of teaching, for example in a situation where the number of students remains too low to run the course.
